Taiwan fears war with the People’s Republic of China in the near future and hopes for support from the West.
Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told Australia Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) on Tuesday that Taiwan is asking the US and “other like-minded countries” to help build its defensive army against China, as the island expects a future war with Beijing could break out in the next few years.
The Republic of Taiwan is a democratically governed sovereign state on the island of Formosa, which the People’s Republic of China considers breakaway territory. China’s leadership has threatened to retake Taiwan by force in an emergency. The island off China’s southeast coast also operates its own military.
Tensions between the two parties have increased in recent months as China stepped up military maneuvers to intimidate Taiwan by violating its sovereign waters and airspace.
