A study by the US organization Freedom House shows that governments around the world are using the corona crisis as an excuse to introduce more censorship and surveillance.
The freedom of the Internet is particularly at risk. This is suggested by a study by the US organization Freedom House. New dimensions are added to surveillance via new apps and the collection of cell phone data. In many countries, internet and cell phone providers are working with governments and authorities.
With reference to historical examples, the organization warns that methods of censorship and surveillance introduced in times of crisis are often permanent and are being established.
In 28 out of 65 countries examined, it can be seen how the apps are used not only for surveillance but also for censorship. In China, for example, content is searched for over 2,000 keywords that are somehow related to COVID-19 or the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
